Components to Redstone
There are many different components to Redstone within Minecraft. You might understand some of the basic stuff that these components can do, but often they have more than one use that many people cant seem to get there head around. Here I will go through all the items within the game that have redstone properties, and explain what can be done with each of the items.
Redstone Ore:
To begin working with Redstone within your worlds, you must go mining for Redstone Ore. To find Redstone Ore, you must go to the bottom 16 layers of the map and go mining. Once you have found a Redstone Ore block, you must break it with an Iron or Diamond Pickaxe. Upon breaking the ore, you will obtain Redstone Dust. You will obtain 4-5 pieces of Redstone Dust from any one Ore block, so Redstone is not a very scarce resource. You can also obtain the Ore Block by using a Silk Touch Pickaxe. Redstone Ore can emit a light level of 9 when the player clicks on it, when it is updated or when a mob (including the player) walks over it with out sneaking. This effect does not emit a Redstone signal, but can be connected to a BUD Switch allowing for cool secret entrances into bases.

Redstone Dust:
Redstone Dust is the main resource you need for your circuitry. Redstone Dust can be obtained by mining Redstone Ore. Once mined you will gain experience and 4-5 pieces of Redstone Dust. Redstone Dust can be crafted into many different items that can also be used within your Redstone Circuits. Redstone Dust can carry signals from blocks like Restone Torchs over a certain distance, and can help get your signal from Point A to Point B without using many Repeaters. A signal can carry for a maximum of 15 pieces of Redstone Dust before a Repeater or any other signal extender must be used to extend the signal length.

Redstone Torch:
A Redstone torch has many uses in the Redstone environment. To craft a Redstone Torch, place a piece of Redstone on top of a Stick inside your crafting grid to obtain a single Redstone Torch. A Redstone torch emits a signal strength of 15 immediately, unless it is inverted into its off state. This can be done by running a line of powered Redstone into the Redstone Torchs connected block, which then turns the torch off. Redstone Torches can be used to create quick pulsing Redstone Clocks. These clocks produce constant lighting updates and will produce lag, so therefore I do not recommend using these Clocks. Redstone Torches are used in 3 Crafting Recipes aswell. They can be used to Craft Redstone Repeaters, Redstone Comparators and Activator Rails.
